Dance TikTok's Footshake Challenge in 3 Different Ways

Whether you call it the foot shake or foot dance, videos of people tapping their feet together have been and still are blowing up all over TikTok. If you want to get in on the action but can't follow along with all of the fast-paced TikToks, we'll slow it down a bit for you and a friend.

One big problem with learning the #footshake or #footdance is that there are actually a few different versions, and the names are usually used interchangeably. Second, no matter which version you want to try out, there aren't many tutorials out there to follow. Most people just want to post videos of themselves successfully performing the dance, rather than take the time to walk others through it.

If you're stumbling upon the craze today, you're probably thinking of the "Oh Nanana" one. This particular version of the dance challenge became popular in mid-2018 when a remix version of Bonde R300's "Oh Nanana" was released by DJ 6RB. The mix lengthened the catchy hook at the beginning of the song into the perfect TikTok video companion.

There are actually a couple of different versions of the Oh Nanana challenge: one that's a solo dance and one that needs two people. We're referring to the latter. And as for the other version of the #footshake/#footdance, it's an older one that uses the song "Faded (Vikstrom Remix)" by Alan Walker. We look at both below.

#1: Oh Nanana (The New Footshake)

While there aren't many tutorials out there breaking down the "Oh Nanana" footshake, we've taken the time to lay out the steps ourselves.

  1. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  2. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  3. Tap the inside of your right feet together three times
  4. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  5. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  6. Immediately tap the outside of your right feet together
  7. Twist to the left, then tap the back of your left feet together

From here, performances vary a lot. Just watch enough videos, and you'll see how people do the rest of the dance differently, often faltering by the end of the clip. The most important thing seems to be sticking to a routine and doing it well. But here's a good rule of thumb for the rest of the steps:

  1. Tap the outside of your right feet together
  2. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  3. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  4. Tap the outside of your left feet together
  5. Twist to the right, then tap the back of your right feet together
  6. Rinse and repeat

As you'll see from the compilation below, there's lots of variation.

And here's a popular example of one directly on TikTok:

#2: Faded (The Old Footshake — Harder Moves)

If that first footshake is a bit too difficult, try starting with the old version. There's the pretty complicated version which we'll discuss first, then a total beginner's version that simplifies a lot of the moves, which you can jump down below to see if you want to start there.

  1. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  2. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  3. Tap the inside of your left feet together again
  4. Tap the outside of your left feet together
  5. Spin right and tap your right feet together
  6. Spin back and tap the outside of your left feet together again
  7. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  8. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  9. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  10. Tap the outside of your right feet together
  11. Spin left and tap your left feet together
  12. Spin back and tap the outside of your right feet together again
  13. Repeat everything

#3: Faded (The Old Footshake — Easier Moves)

If that looked entirely too hard, there's a more relaxed version you can try where you don't do alternating spins. Erick Bassan's walkthrough on YouTube is easy to learn the moves from. He and a friend show off the dance in full speed at first, then slow down the footage to demonstrate each movement individually. When it's all said and done, there are only seven steps you and your partner need to know:

  1. Tap the inside of your right feet together
  2. Tap the inside of your left feet together
  3. Tap the inside of your right feet together again
  4. Tap the outside of your right feet together
  5. Spin left and tap the bottom of your left feet together
  6. Spin back and tap the outside of your right feet together again
  7. Repeat starting at #2 above
